RADCLIFF — Susan Gilpin and Amanda Dole refuse to give up on their father’s dream.
The two daughters of Charles Dole, though living in Cincinnati, have reopened Now Fashions, on North Wilson Road.
Their father was killed at the store July 21 when police say two Knoxville, Tenn., men robbed and shot him.
Although still grieving the loss of their father, the scene was not grim Tuesday morning, as red and yellow balloons floated outside, beaming with the young women’s resolve in the wake of tragedy.
"The easiest thing to do would have been to close it down, just throw in the towel," Amanda Dole said, standing among racks of clothing as friends and workers finished filling racks and shelves. "But Daddy worked hard to hold this thing."
Opening a small store on Knox Boulevard in 2005, Charles Dole quickly grew the trendy fashion shop to open the Wilson Road location last fall, nearly triple in size.
Amanda Dole said that it took 25 years for the family to do the same in Ohio.
"This was his livelihood," Gilpin said. "This was his mark on the town."
The two women said military spouses frequented the shop and their father was excited about growth coming to Fort Knox.
Susan and Amanda planned to talk to police, grab a few things and leave when they drove down shortly after their father’s slaying.
However, the sentiment of the community compelled them to stay and, two weeks later, has driven them to reopen the shop that may be memorialized as Chuck’s Place.
"We kinda realized it was more than just a business for him," Dole said.
Despite windows being covered Monday, the presence of cars in the parking lot prompted former customers to stop by, sharing their memories of Chuck with his daughters.
A woman stopped by with her children, not knowing of violent end of the store owner’s life.
The woman teared up, and they cried together, as she told of losing her husband in combat and how Chuck had consoled her.
"He was the one they came and talked to, a father figure," Gilpin said.
Both expressed gratitude for the police making a speedy arrest and to the community for its support. Dole may consider moving here to run the business.
"The incident that happened here doesn’t show what the community is all about," said City Councilman J.J. Duvall, whose father owns the building where the store is located.
Jermaine Kirkland and Jamah Harris were arrested in Tennessee and extradited to Kentucky on murder, robbery and other charges. Both are held in lieu of $1 million bonds.
The daughters have added security cameras and anti-theft devices at the front of the store, and they have changed the hours. It will now be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
However, they are determined to make sure it remains Chuck’s Place.
"This was a dream," Dole said. "We couldn’t let it go. We couldn’t let his memory go."

Eleven local golf caddies recently were awarded Evans Scholarships.
The Evans Scholars Foundation presented the awards following individual interviews with each scholarship candidate at a selection meeting held at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
"These young men and women have excelled in academics and in serivice to their schools and communities," ESP educational director Jim Moore siad. "We welcome them to the Evans Scholars family and look forwrd to their continued success as college students."
All Evans scholars are golf caddies who earned full tuition and housing scholarships based upon four criteria: strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. Evans Scholars from Ohio traditionally attend either Ohio State University or Miami University and live in a house at one of the 14 chapters in the Evans Scholars Program.

Math, languages, and a dose of humor in Wurtzler's class

CHELMSFORD -- "Ciao." "Auf Wiedersehen." "Dosvedanya."
Just a couple ways Steve Wurtzler's second-grader's say goodbye.
"Kids are highly impressionable," Wurtzler says. "I want them to be respective and aware of the many cultures we have in our country."
Wurtzler, a Cincinnati native, has taught at the Harrington Elementary School for 10 years. His passion for teaching is coupled with his desire to create a positive classroom environment.
Smiling pictures of every student line the blackboard.
"I want them to feel a sense of ownership in this classroom," Wurtzler says.
Jars of bright-colored lima beans represent money, and students are given small jobs to learn responsibility. Hard work pays off, is the lesson taught.
"I challenge myself to find ways to get kids to be responsible," Wurtzler says. "I want them to be able to navigate the world by thinking."
Making math enjoyable is one of Wurtzler's specialties. "Salute," one of many math games played, requires quick thinking. Students hold up playing cards and guess what amount would equal the total number. Wurtzler insists he's fortunate to learn from other teachers, and he presents workshops for other educators.
A good rapport and humor are also parts of his teaching style. Wurtzler tries to relate to each student's personality.
"I'm a serious teacher," he says. "I have high expectations, but my kids know I'm goofy."
"Why am I a doughnut and you're a Munchkin?" Wurtzler asks his class.
"Because you're big," answers a handful of second-graders.
Wurtzler's cat stories also get rave reviews, especially about his 3-year old cat, Gigi Baby.
Storytelling is a way to be personable, but encourages students with creative writing, Wurtzler says.
He says he's lucky to be able to do what he loves.
"To help children learn about life -- it's fascinating," Wurtzler said. "It challenges me to think and grow as a teacher and a person."
