Matt Wurtzler - Cross Country Part II

                       Inspiration of parents moves runners

TROY, Ohio - Emily Richmond's mother died three days after giving birth to her 17 years ago. On Saturday, the Roger Bacon junior earned a second consecutive berth in the Ohio Division II state cross country championships with her mother in mind.

Roger Bacon coach Dave Feichtner asks his runners to compete with someone else in mind. Those inspirations motivated Richmond as well as senior Matt Wurtzler, who took seventh in the boys' Division II state race to also continue his season next Saturday at Scioto Downs in Columbus.

"Mr. Feichtner wanted us to be able to call on someone's spirit," said Richmond, who placed 10th with a time of 20 minutes, 11.99 seconds. "I felt my Mom's spirit come back down and help me."

Richmond earned the final state qualifying spot last season, finishing 16th in 19:58.18. Even though her time was slower this season there was no drama on Saturday. She ran in the top 10 for nearly all of the 3.1 miles covered.

Wurtzler won the Greater Catholic League Central league and Division II district championships this season. Wurtzler previously had used cross country season as a way to get into shape for wrestling, but with the help of his father he became more serious about his running.

"My dad trained me and state was a dream," said Wurtzler. "He prepared me for this race and I knew I was going to do well. I had confidence in myself. He has been my main inspiration and last March is when we began to take it seriously."

Last season Wurtzler finished in 40th at the regional meet. His time of 16:43.57 on Saturday cut nearly one minute off of last year's showing.

Matt Wurtzler - Cross Country winner

By Kevin Goheen • Enquirer contributor • October 24, 2009

Cross Country District Meet:

Weather conditions at Voice of America Park on Saturday were less than ideal. The wind gusted, the temperature dropped throughout the day and the fields were in a quagmire after Friday's rain.

But ideal, evidently, is in the foot of the runner

St. Xavier, ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, overcame the elements, as well as No. 2 Lakota West, to win Race A at the district meet 36-59 and move on to next week's regional meet at Troy. Defending state champion Mason won Race B 45-63 over second-place Elder.

The top four teams and top 16 individuals qualified for the regional meet.

Mason junior and defending state champion Zach Wills had the fastest time of the day - 16 minutes, 29.1 seconds - to edge Elder junior Josh Makin by less than two seconds in Race B.

Sycamore senior Nick Fry won Race A in 16:36.4 to beat St. Xavier junior Jack Butler by just more than two seconds, but Butler was just the first of a flood of Bombers to quickly cross the finish line.

All seven St. Xavier runners finished among the top 19 of the race, and their five scoring runners were in the top 15. Butler was his team's No. 2 runner and finished third overall at last week's Greater Catholic League South meet, but he stepped up his performance.

"I think this race shows we're building momentum as a team," Butler said. "... We have been working toward this all season long."

The elements were a pleasant sight for Butler.

"I actually thought it was a lot of fun," Butler said. "I can't think of any better running weather than this."

Along with St. Xavier and Lakota West, La Salle and Sycamore also qualified for the regional from Race A.. Colerain and Oak Hills joined Mason and Elder in advancing from Race B.

"Obviously we wanted to win the district championship, but emotionally we tried to be as business-like as possible," St. Xavier coach Mike Dehring. said of his Bombers. "Starting with our league meet, it's hard to get at an emotionally high level four weeks straight. To do this against teams like that has to give us confidence going into the - hopefully - next two weeks."

Roger Bacon senior Matt Wurtzler won the Division II race in 17:26.8, beating Finneytown senior Brad Besserman. Blanchester won the team title in a tight five-way race for the four qualifying spots.

Blanchester scored 101 points and Wyoming was second with 108, followed by Roger Bacon with 111 and Taylor with 116. McNicholas, which had beaten Roger Bacon at the GCL Central meet last week, finished fifth. Senior Matt Johnson and junior Jacob Boehm qualified for the regional meet as individuals for the Rockets.

Summit Country Day junior Colin Cotton won the Division III race in 17:21.6. Cotton, who finished fourth at the state meet last year, helped his team finish third with 58 points and qualify for the regional. Mariemont's 54 points won the Division III team title, beating Badin by two. Cincinnati Country Day finished fourth to also qualify for the regional meet.

Five running for four Proctorville council seats

Published Wednesday, October 21, 2009

PROCTORVILLE — Two incumbents on Proctorville council want back on the village's governing body as they face off with three other contenders for four open seats this November.

Raymond "Wes" Shephard, a retired truck driver, is finishing up his second consecutive term, having been on council in the past and gone on a hiatus.

"The main reason I am running is to have the opportunity to serve the people of Proctorville," Shephard said. "I want to continue to improve our water system in town, all-round beautification and cleanliness of our village. That is some of the things. The quality of the appearance of the village has improved. At the present time, we have a very good police force."

The other incumbent is Larry David Peters, who works at Lowe's.

"I want to continue to learn how the village council conducts its business for the village," he said. "The playground we did for the children, I had a big part in that. Something for the kids. The satisfaction of finding out how my town is run. It is a new experience for me, to see how the money is spent in the town I live in."

This is the first time running for office for Justin Wurtzler, store manager at the Lowe's in South Point. He has lived in Proctorville for the past six years.

"The platform I am running on is helping make the community a good clean, safe place for kids, helping out with the elderly and seniors and giving kids some things to do," Wurtzler said. "To try to get more people involved in community activities. I would also like to help beautify the town."

Brenda Chapman, manager of the Wendy's in Proctorville, said in an email that children are a priority for her campaign.

"I would like to see more involvement with our children," she said. "I would like to have a better looking village square like Chesapeake has. I would like to get more people involved in our village and we need to see some more sidewalks repaired."

Attempts by phone to reach the fifth candidate, Jeffrey Chapman, were not successful by press time.

The four winners will join Dale Burcham and Jerry Thompson. Gary Whitley and Fred Cooper are leaving council.
